Methodology
Cost ranges
Procedure cost ranges are aggregated from publicly available industry sources, including the NAPHIA State of the Industry Report, CareCredit cost guides, and AVMA economic reports. Ranges represent typical US clinic pricing, not individual quotes.
Breed risk tiers
Breed health risks are sourced from OFA breed statistics, AKC Canine Health Foundation research, and the Merck Veterinary Manual. We assign qualitative likelihood labels (low, moderate, elevated, high) rather than invented percentages. Where peer-reviewed prevalence data exists, we cite it inline.
Calculator
The worth-it calculator uses a transparent, deterministic formula:
annual_expected_claim = base_claim[risk_tier] * (1 + max(0, age - 2) * 0.06) annual_covered = max(0, (annual_expected_claim - deductible) * reimbursement_pct) total_covered = annual_covered * horizon_years total_premium = monthly_premium * 12 * horizon_years net_benefit = total_covered - total_premium
Base annual expected claim values per risk tier are derived from NAPHIA claim severity data and adjusted for breed risk. Output is an industry-average estimate, not an insurance quote.
Limitations
- Cost ranges vary by clinic, region, and individual case complexity.
- Risk tiers reflect breed-level patterns. Individual pets vary.
- The calculator does not model insurer-specific annual caps or co-insurance maximums.
- Pre-existing condition exclusions are not modeled.
