| Approach | Typical cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Conservative (crate rest, meds) | $400 to $1,500 | Grade 1 or 2 cases, still ambulatory |

Insurance coverage rules
- 01IVDD is covered as an accident-and-illness claim when not pre-existing and after the waiting period.
- 02Some entry-level plans exclude hereditary conditions in chondrodystrophic breeds. Check the language.
- 03The MRI counts toward the annual cap. Plans with a $5,000 cap can be exhausted by a single IVDD episode.
- 04Post-op rehab and hydrotherapy are covered by most insurers when tied to the covered surgery.
Breeds with elevated IVDD risk
French Bulldog and IVDD surgery
As a chondrodystrophic breed, French Bulldogs carry elevated IVDD risk. Surgical decompression is often required, frequently before age six.
Dachshund and IVDD surgery
Dachshunds carry the highest documented IVDD risk of any breed. Spinal surgery is one of the largest single insurance claims this breed generates.
Pembroke Welsh Corgi and IVDD surgery
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi's long back and short legs put it among the higher-risk breeds for intervertebral disc disease. Surgical decompression is sometimes required.
Basset Hound and IVDD surgery
The Basset Hound's chondrodystrophic body type puts it at elevated risk for intervertebral disc disease. Surgical decompression is sometimes required.
